Special Olympics
Who We Are: Special Olympics Ohio envisions a more inclusive Ohio for all that’s driven by the transformative power of sport. With a presence throughout the state, we are part of the global inclusion movement by providing opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to fully participate in their communities.
What We Do: Our mission drives everything we do as we advance the global inclusion movement through sports, health education, and leadership programs that empower people with intellectual disabilities throughout Ohio. Through year-round sports training and competition in 20 Olympic-style sports, 20,000 athletes have the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a community where they belong. In addition to sports training and competition, we provide free health screenings, leadership training , in-school programming, and more.
Why We’re Important: Our organization provides a lifetime of opportunities to athletes of all ages, at no cost to them, as we tackle the stigma, isolation, and injustice that people with intellectual disabilities often face. Our core programs— Sports, Unified Champion Schools, Healthy Athletes, and Athlete Leadership—go beyond sporting events, to drive social change that enables whole community participation for people with intellectual disabilities.
How We Impact the Community: Community means everything to us. Through our shared experiences and love of sports, Special Olympics Ohio creates a sense of connectedness in an inclusive culture. We provide a space for individuals, families, community partners, and businesses to come together as we focus on the courage, strength, and skill of Special Olympics Ohio athletes. Our signature, community-based fundraising events also take place throughout the year so that everyone has the opportunity to contribute and be a part of the inclusion revolution.
How You Can Help: There are many pathways to engage with Special Olympics Ohio—connect with us on social media to help spread the word, participate in a fundraising event, or volunteer at the local or state level. All are welcome to join us for a rewarding experience where everyone belongs!
